Typical US painting and decorating wastage
Allow 10% extra paint for touch-ups and second-coat keying. Cutting in around windows and complex trim can push wastage to 15%. Our defaults reflect common US trade allowances, and can be adjusted upwards for non-standard geometry or downwards where experience supports a lower figure.

On-site considerations for primer
Below 50°F or above 85°F most water-based paints will not cure properly; check the technical data sheet before opening the can. Lead-paint disclosure (EPA RRP) applies to any pre-1978 home.

Sources & methodology
This calculator estimates the gallons of primer required by dividing total surface area (multiplied by the number of coats) by the coverage rate in square feet per gallon. It then rounds up to whole cans using the selected can size, and multiplies by the price per can to produce a total material cost. Coverage rate is user-adjustable, allowing the input to reflect either the label rate or a reduced figure that accounts for surface texture and application method. No separate wastage multiplier is applied; any allowance is absorbed into the coverage rate the user enters.
