When water is entered in gallons, the calculator converts it using the standard factor of 8.34 lb per gallon before performing the division, yielding a dimensionless w/c ratio. The result reflects the ratio as defined in ACI 318, where a lower w/c ratio generally corresponds to higher compressive strength and reduced permeability. The primary assumption is that water density equals 8.34 lb/gal, consistent with standard US mix design practice.
