Sources & methodology

This calculator estimates the minimum net free area (NFA) of roof ventilation required under IRC R806.2, using the 1:300 ratio (attic floor area in sq ft divided by 300) when intake and exhaust vents are balanced, or 1:150 when they are not. The balanced-ventilation split allocates 50% of the required NFA to intake vents (typically soffit) and 50% to exhaust vents (typically ridge). Because the tool derives attic floor area from eaves length rather than a direct floor-area input, results assume a simplified rectangular attic footprint and may not reflect irregular roof geometries.
